The greatest question you can ever ask is, “What is the will of God for my life?” The answer to this affects everything about us forever. The greatest peace, contentment and joy we can ever know is in the centre of God’s will.
Discovering His will for our lives, however, is not a tightrope we may fall off at any moment, neither is it a maze to confuse and puzzle us. First and foremost it is about having a relationship with God.
I will never forget the impact a missionary to communist Russia made on me when I was a new Christian. He said he was often asked if he was ever afraid travelling and ministering behind the Iron Curtain. He admitted there were such times but added, “I am safer in the centre of Moscow in the will of God than I am driving down a motorway in Britain out of it.”
When we become followers of Jesus the desire to do His will becomes a part of our new nature. As we develop our relationship with Him His will for us becomes a natural course that leads us into His plans and purposes.
When Jesus was preparing His disciples for His departure, He told them, “I no longer call you servants, for a servant does not know what His master does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I have heard from my father I have made known to you,” John 15:15. When our heart is surrendered to God we are in His will and He will lead us. We do not have to live in the fear of missing it but we can live in the joy of knowing and doing it.
